The Ambum Stone

The Ambum Stone — This famous prehistoric sculpture was discovered in the Ambum Valley of Papua New Guinea   and dates to around 1500 BCE.

Carved from greywacke stone, the figure’s exact subject remains a mystery, though it is often thought to represent a baby echidna (spiny anteater)  .

Revered for its smooth form and refined craftsmanship, the Ambum Stone is one of the most celebrated artworks from the ancient Pacific region.
