Coffin and 𝘮𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘺 Board of Pasebakhaemipet

The lid of this coffin is richly decorated with multiple images of Osiris, god of the dead; Nut, the sky goddess; and, on the interior, a figure of the goddess of the afterlife—three deities that together form a miniature cosmos for the deceased.

The outer surfaces portray Pasebakhaemipet’s journey to the next world, including the weighing of his heart against the feather of truth. His 𝘮𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘺 board represents him as a living presence who has successfully entered the afterlife.

Carbon-14 dating (2009) places the death of Pasebakhaemipet, mayor of Thebes, between 1110 and 939 B.C.E., aligning with the Twenty-first Dynasty style of the coffin. The lavish workmanship and costly 𝘮𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 reflect his elevated status in Egyptian society.
