Coffin Lid of the Mummy of Takait

The coffin lid of the mummy of Takait, a priestess of Amun-Re, dates to Egypt’s New Kingdom, possibly the Nineteenth Dynasty in the 13th century BC. Made of wood covered with plaster and paint, it measures 170 cm in height and is now housed in the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung.

Across the body of the lid, the sky goddess Nut is depicted kneeling with outstretched, winged arms. A vertical inscription down her legs records Takait addressing Nut as her mother, asking to be carried to the polar stars so that she may achieve eternal life.

On the outermost wooden coffin, her face was painted a natural yellow tone, reflecting earthly life, but on the innermost lid Takait is shown with the golden skin of the gods.

In this layer, she also appears directly before the deities, represented in six scenes beneath the protective wings of Nut.
