Milwaukee County Zoo reported a dramatic incident on Tuesday morning involving one of its oldest residents, Ruth, a 43-year-old African savanna elephant.
At approximately 11 a.m. on September 2, Ruth lost her footing on a log inside the outdoor habitat following aggressive behavior from a fellow herd member. The elephant fell onto her side and was unable to stand up immediately.
Although she made several determined attempts to rise, her age and position made the effort difficult. In human care, African savanna elephants are considered geriatric in their forties. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums notes that the median life expectancy for a female in managed care is 39.4 years.
The Zoo activated its emergency protocol within minutes. Staff notified the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team (HURT) as well as Dawes Rigging and Crane, both long-time partners in animal safety operations. Teams from animal care, maintenance, forestry, and grounds all moved quickly to assist.
Zoo officials explained that staff members regularly train for such scenarios with HURT and Dawes. Preparedness drills are a key part of the facility’s safety program.
A front-load vehicle operated by a trained Zoo machine operator was carefully positioned under the direction of the elephant care coordinator. The maneuver provided the leverage Ruth needed to stand again. Once upright, she walked on her own into the indoor habitat.
Veterinarians immediately conducted a full examination to check for injuries or strain. According to the Zoo, Ruth is now stable, under close monitoring, and showing signs of recovery.
“This was a situation we always hope to avoid, but our team responded exactly as trained,” Zoo officials said in a statement. “Their coordinated efforts ensured the best possible outcome for Ruth.”
The incident also highlights the realities of caring for an aging elephant herd. All three members of the Zoo’s herd are over 40. The Elephant Care Center was designed with geriatric animals in mind, featuring a crane and lifting equipment for emergencies.
While HURT and Dawes Rigging were not ultimately required, Zoo leadership expressed gratitude for their readiness to assist.
Zoo staff cautioned that similar incidents may occur again, given the herd’s age. For now, Ruth is back on her feet, a testament to the cooperation and preparedness of the Milwaukee County Zoo community.
