Editorial: A Dog Is Not a Toy — Think Twice Before You Abandon Him

At kennels across the country, countless dogs sit in silence, waiting. Some were surrendered because their owners grew tired of them. Others were left behind because they barked too much, disrupted daily routines, or made it difficult for families to travel on holiday.

For the dogs, none of this makes sense. They don’t understand excuses or convenience. They only know loyalty. And so they wait.

They wait for a familiar voice, a hand that once fed them, the person they thought would return. They wait a second, a minute, an hour. They wait through days, months, even years — never knowing why they were left behind, but always hoping.

A dog’s trust is unwavering. He believes his person will come back because, unlike the one who abandoned him, his love never falters.

That is why we must remind ourselves: a dog is not a toy. He is not a seasonal accessory or a temporary distraction. He is a living being, a family member, who depends entirely on the humans who chose to bring him home.

Adopting a dog means accepting responsibility for his life. It means committing to care through challenges and changes, through holidays and hardships.

So think twice before you get a dog. Consider not just the joy and companionship he will bring, but also the sacrifices he will require. Because when you walk away, he will not understand your reasons. He will only know that the person he trusted never came back.
