What began as an ordinary walk by the lake nearly turned into a trip to the hospital—or worse. But thanks to a quick-thinking dog named Ruger, one man is safe today.
The pair had been enjoying their usual walk when Ruger suddenly began acting strangely. Normally gentle, Ruger grew tense and aggressive, nipping at his owner and wrapping around his leg. At first, the behavior seemed confusing, even alarming.
“I turned to scold him,” his owner recalled, “but Ruger darted around me, almost like he was trying to keep me away from something.” Moments later, the reason became clear.
Just a few feet away, a copperhead snake lay coiled against a log. Ruger had spotted the venomous reptile before his owner did and was doing everything he could to block him from harm. The dog even tried to strike at the snake himself, risking his own safety.
Grabbing a stick, the owner was able to finish the job. The copperhead was gone, but the reality of what had just happened lingered. “It almost brought tears to my eyes,” he said. “Ruger risked his life to save mine.”
Sitting down on the trail, man and dog shared a quiet moment together. The scratches from Ruger’s dew claws stung, but the owner knew he had narrowly avoided something far worse.
“This guy is by far my guardian,” he said proudly. “Best dog ever award goes to him. I’ll take a cut from him over a snake bite any day.”
As the saying goes, a dog may be the only creature on earth that loves you more than you love yourself. For Ruger, that love may very well have saved a life.
