The Lady of Elche

The “Lady of Elche” is a celebrated example of ancient Iberian art, unearthed in 1897 at La Alcudia, just south of Elche, Spain.

Today, it is housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid.

Carved from limestone in the late 5th to early 4th century BCE, the sculpture portrays a woman with an idealized face, adorned in elaborate attire and intricate jewelry.

Originally polychromed, her eyes were once inlaid with vitreous paste, enhancing the lifelike quality of this iconic figure.
