Head of a Man

Greek or Roman, Late Hellenistic to Early Imperial, 1st Century BCE–1st Century CE
This sculpted head of a man is carved from lumachella orientale, a distinctive marble embedded with fossilized shells.
The stone was highly prized in antiquity and quarried near Thuburbo Majus in present-day Tunisia. Its use reflects both the craftsmanship of the sculptor and the extensive trade networks that supplied luxury materials across the Mediterranean world.
