MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The serene morning of August 27, 2025, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror at Annunciation Catholic Church and School. A senseless act of violence took the lives of two innocent children and wounded many others, leaving a community in shock and mourning. But amid the tragedy, a story of profound bravery and sacrifice has emerged, reminding everyone that even in the darkest moments, the human spirit shines brightest.
Ten-year-old Weston Halsne is alive today because of the quick-thinking and heroic actions of his best friend, Victor. As bullets flew through the sanctuary, Victor didn’t hesitate. Without a thought for his own safety, he threw himself on top of Weston, creating a human shield to protect him from the gunfire. In doing so, Victor took a bullet, but he saved his friend’s life.
Weston was rushed into surgery to remove a bullet fragment from his neck, a lasting reminder of the day’s trauma and his friend’s incredible courage. Thankfully, doctors say he is recovering well. Victor, after being treated for his injuries, has since been released from the hospital.
The children’s classmates and neighbors, along with a grateful community, have been quick to give Victor the title he has so rightly earned: a hero. His selfless act in the face of terror has become a powerful symbol of love and bravery. As the city of Minneapolis begins to heal, the story of Victor and Weston serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the fact that even at a young age, true friendship can inspire the most courageous acts.
