Dr. James Sebesta: A Hero in the Midst of Tragedy
When gunfire erupted at the Las Vegas concert, panic swept through the crowd. Among the thousands of terrified people was Dr. James Sebesta, a surgeon — and more importantly, a man defined by compassion.
As the chaos unfolded, he turned to his wife and told her to leave with their friends, to get to safety, and that he would meet them later at the hotel. His priority was clear: protect his loved ones, then help anyone else he could.
Armed with nothing but his medical knowledge and steady resolve, Dr. Sebesta went person to person, searching for the wounded. In a crowd where 58 were killed and 527 injured, he focused on stopping bleeding, carrying victims to safety, and offering whatever treatment was possible amid the horror.
He carried the injured. He carried those who didn’t survive. And through it all, he refused to abandon the field. Though he could have left with his wife and saved himself, he chose to remain — because he believed his duty was to help.
Dr. James Sebesta showed that heroism is not only about bravery under fire, but about choosing humanity when fear tells you to run. He was, in every sense of the word, a hero.
