Two-Sided Stela of Pluriform Thoth Roman Period

Two-Sided Stela of Pluriform Thoth
Roman Period, 1st–2nd century CE
Egypt. Limestone.
This stela depicts Thoth in three distinct forms, shown from left to right: assimilated with the moon god Khonsu-Harpokrates, in baboon form, and as an ibis-headed crowned figure. The ibis-headed Thoth wears an elaborate mythological kilt similar to those worn by Roman Period pharaohs at Dendara.
The kilt is decorated with three small panels: at the top, a griffin-like figure thought to represent Nemesis; below, an eagle (?), and at the bottom, a seated baboon.
