van Stepanov: The Measure of a Man’s Strength

A tense moment beneath the Tallac Bridge in South Lake Tahoe became the scene for extraordinary heroism. A 375-pound black bear, already sedated, was sinking fast and drowning beneath the frigid water, as a large crowd watched helplessly.

Without hesitation, a Russian visitor named Ivan Stepanov ripped off his shoes and plunged straight into the freezing river.

Swimming hard, he reached the thrashing animal and wrapped his arms under its neck to keep it calm as the sedative took effect. Ivan then painstakingly guided the massive bear to shore so wildlife officers could safely check and release it back into the wilderness.

When asked why he risked his life, his answer was simple and profound:

“In my country, we say a man’s strength is measured by who he chooses to protect, even if it has claws.”
Ivan Stepanov’s action is a powerful testament that true courage knows no species, and the philosophy of protecting all creatures is a core value that transcends borders.
