The Utah Quintuplets: From Four to Nine in One Go

Rachelle and Jayson Wilkinson, a Utah couple, only intended to add a third child to their family. Instead, they welcomed five new members at once, setting an astonishing U.S. record.

Record-Breaking Birth: On July 31, 2007, Rachelle delivered quintuplets—three girls and two boys—at a Phoenix hospital. Their combined birth weight of 21 pounds, 7.2 ounces set a national record for quintuplets.
The Courageous Choice: After struggling to conceive, the couple turned to fertility treatment. Although multiples are a known risk, when they saw the five tiny lives on the ultrasound, they declined the advice for selective reduction. Rachelle stated, “there was no way to choose.”
The Pregnancy Milestone: Rachelle carried the pregnancy to 34 weeks, a remarkable achievement for high-order multiples. She joked, “By the end there was no room for bending or sitting,” but affirmed that every minute was worth the eventual arrival of her healthy babies.
A Bustling Household: With two older children (a 7-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter) and five healthy newborns, the Wilkinsons’ simple plan for a third baby resulted in a bustling household of nine members.
Their story is a beautiful testament to how the perseverance of love brought forth a result far exceeding all expectations.
