Farewell to the Icon: Perry, the 30-Year-Old Donkey Who Inspired Shrek’s Donkey

Perry, affectionately known as Pericles, was more than just a farm animal—he was a living legend, the real-life muse who shaped the universally adored animated character Donkey from the Shrek franchise.
Back in 1999, the talented animators from DreamWorks made a pilgrimage to Perry’s home in Palo Alto, California. They didn’t just photograph him; they meticulously studied his unique movements and mannerisms, from his trademark expressive head tilts (indicating curiosity or confusion) to the way he would flick his tail in an irritated fashion. These physical quirks were skillfully incorporated into the character design and personality of Donkey, whose voice, provided by Eddie Murphy, completed the perfect blend of real-life action and animated humor.
Perry spent his long and full life as part of the beloved Barron Park Donkeys duo. On January 2, 2025, he was humanely euthanized at the age of 30 after suffering from laminitis, a painfully debilitating hoof condition common in older equines.
In his final weeks, Perry received extraordinary care and love from the community. He was surrounded by affection, soothing music, and even financial support from the city to ensure his final days were comfortable. Perry is remembered not just for his Hollywood ties or his formal name “Pericles” (a nod to the ancient Greek orator, fitting for the chatty animated sidekick), but for the pure joy and connection he fostered within his local community. His passing is a heartfelt loss, but his legacy lives on in every time we hear that iconic animated laugh.
