Against the Clock: The Dramatic Rescue of Dallas the Dog From a Plastic Container

Dallas the dog is finally breathing freely again after having her head stuck in a large plastic pretzel container, a predicament that put her life in imminent danger.

On August 17, Canine Rescue of Central Pennsylvania (CRCPA) received reports that Dallas was spotted chaotically wandering around York County, Penn., with the plastic container jammed over her head, according to the WGAL.

The no-kill rescue responded swiftly, deeply concerned about the canine’s survival given the size and placement of the jar. Beth Miller, a CRCPA volunteer, detailed the urgency: “That plastic container is down to, I would say, about a quarter of the way down its neck… it’s not getting water. It’s not getting food. We’re worried about it getting proper oxygen.”

The All-Night Search

Rescue workers and volunteers located Dallas several times over the next few days. However, the frightened and confused dog dodged into a cornfield whenever anyone approached.

By Tuesday, fearing the dog was running out of time, CRCPA posted a desperate call for help on Facebook. A renewed search effort was launched, and at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, a fresh group of volunteers stepped in, including drone pilot Dallas Fuhrman from Nighthawk Drone Services. Fuhrman used his drone to aid the search through the night.

At 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the breakthrough came. CRCPA shared the happy conclusion: “At 3 a.m., Dallas (named in honor of drone pilot Dallas Fuhrman) was finally located deep in a cornfield, disoriented, exhausted, and still struggling with the jar.”

After the distressed pup was found, she was immediately freed from the jar and rushed to Shores Veterinary Emergency Center for treatment. CRCPA reported that Dallas was suffering from severe dehydration, was infested with ticks, and was clearly in distress. She is now receiving urgent care.

The rescue promised to keep Dallas’ growing fanbase updated on her recovery. The dog is currently not available for adoption, but donations are being accepted for her extensive medical care. CRCPA concluded its post with a profound thank you: “The rescue of Dallas was only possible because of a compassionate community that refused to give up. From drone pilots to search teams to every person who kept sharing her story — Thank you!!!”
