Rodney Smith Jr.: 50 States,50 Lawns,One Mission of Gratitude

It all started with one simple act of kindness—a man and his lawnmower. Now, it’s a powerful nationwide movement of service and gratitude.

Rodney Smith Jr., from Huntsville, Alabama, has just completed something truly extraordinary: his 50th lawn in his 50-state mowing tour, concluding a journey that has touched hearts from coast to coast.

For years, Rodney has dedicated his summers to mowing lawns for free, serving those who have already served us: veterans, active-duty military, Gold Star families, and widows of veterans. What began as a local gesture has blossomed into a patriotic mission that embodies the very best of America: compassion, community, and profound gratitude.

A 22-Day Tour Against All Odds

Rodney set out on his latest 50-state tour on September 17, armed with his mower, his truck, and his mission. Over the next 22 days, he crisscrossed the country, mowing over 50 lawns, meeting hundreds of families, and gathering countless stories of service, sacrifice, and resilience.

Just this week, he officially completed his journey—the 50th lawn, the 50th state, marking another summer of giving. Thanks to the generosity of American Airlines, which covered his flights to Hawaii and Alaska, he was able to reach his final, most distant stops and close out this year’s tour with pride and purpose.

The Legacy of Gratitude Begins at the Front Door

What makes Rodney’s story so moving is not just the miles he’s traveled; it’s the powerful message he leaves behind: Gratitude doesn’t have to be grand—it can be as simple as a freshly cut yard, a handshake, and a heartfelt “thank you.”

Every lawn tells a story: a widow remembering her husband who served in Vietnam, a Marine sharing photos of fallen friends, a soldier’s child proudly watching as Rodney tends the grass their parent once did. Rodney listens, learns, and gives back because it’s the right thing to do.

When he’s not on tour, Rodney leads the Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service—a nonprofit that challenges kids across the country to mow 50 lawns for free for the elderly, disabled, veterans, and single parents in their neighborhoods. It’s a movement of kindness taking root everywhere, teaching young people that service starts right outside their front door.

Rodney has inspired thousands of children to take up the 50-yard challenge—proving that one man’s humble idea can grow into a national legacy of generosity.

The Final Dream: Arlington National Cemetery
While this year’s tour is complete, Rodney’s dream has one final, deeply meaningful goal: he hopes to one day mow the lawns of Arlington National Cemetery, the resting place of over 400,000 American heroes.

“It would be an honor beyond words,” he has said. “Every blade of grass there tells a story of sacrifice. To mow that ground would be my way of saying thank you—one pass at a time.”

Rodney has shown the world that a single act of kindness—something as humble as mowing a lawn—can ripple across an entire nation, reminding us all what true service and gratitude mean.
