Old Sarum

Old Sarum is an ancient site in Wiltshire, England, with a history stretching back over 5,000 years. It began as a Neolithic settlement and later became an Iron Age hillfort.

During the Roman period, it remained an important location, and by the Norman conquest, it was developed into a powerful stronghold.

William the Conqueror built a motte-and-bailey castle there in the 11th century, and later a cathedral was also constructed within its walls.

Old Sarum became a center of military, political, and religious life, but by the 13th century, it was gradually abandoned in favor of nearby Salisbury, where a new cathedral was built.

Today, Old Sarum is a historic ruin managed by English Heritage, attracting visitors interested in archaeology, medieval history, and stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
