Coffin of Pa-di-tu-Amun
Period: Third Intermediate Period, 22nd–23rd Dynasty, c. 945–889 B.C.
This coffin, belonging to the man Pa-di-tu-Amun, presents a fascinating case of reuse in ancient Egypt. Originally crafted for a female priestess—identified by the titles “Mistress of the House, Chantress of [Amun]”—the coffin lid still retains distinctly feminine artistic features.
The practice of repurposing coffins was not uncommon during this era, often due to economic or material constraints. Despite the re-inscription, traces of the original owner’s identity and the feminine aesthetics remain clearly visible.
