With a Rabbit by Her Side, 10-Year-Old Liliana Fights Cancer with Courage and Kindness

When 10-year-old Liliana Holland of Bear Creek, Alabama, walked back through her front door after a recent hospital stay, the first thing she reached for wasn’t medicine or rest — it was Snowflake, her loyal rabbit.

Just days earlier, Liliana had collapsed after her sugar levels suddenly dropped. She was rushed to her doctor, treated, and stabilized. Now, as she continues to recover, Snowflake hasn’t left her side.

“Snowflake is like a dog,” her mother, Rachel, chuckled. “It follows Lili wherever she goes, and it brings her comfort.”

For Liliana, Snowflake is more than a pet. It is a companion that has hopped beside her through some of the hardest days of her young life. Because just a little over a year ago, everything changed.

It started with something simple. Liliana had gotten her leg stuck in a banister, and when it was pulled out, her parents noticed the bruising looked unusual. Concerned, Adam and Rachel took their daughter for tests. The diagnosis was swift and shocking: B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

The news reshaped every part of her childhood. Hospital visits became routine. Lumbar surgeries and chemotherapy became constants. Only 9 years old at the time, Liliana faced treatments and side effects that would challenge anyone. But she never fought alone. Snowflake was always there, a soft, furry reminder of love and safety.

This past summer, Liliana endured lumbar surgery once again. Walking has been painful and difficult since, but she pushes forward with a determination far beyond her years. She has also just finished a round of steroids — drugs that, while essential in fighting cancer, can trigger steroid-induced diabetes. That is why monitoring her sugar levels is so critical.

“Snowflake has been clinging onto Lili these past few weeks,” Rachel shared. The Holland family believes the rabbit senses when Liliana is unwell, often curling up close and refusing to leave her side.

Liliana is now in the maintenance stage of her treatment. This means she takes daily chemotherapy medications at home, has doctor visits once a month, and undergoes lumbar surgery with chemo every three months. The journey is far from over, but maintenance is a milestone many families cling to with hope.

Through it all, Liliana hasn’t stopped thinking of others. She adores horses and painting, but her biggest joy comes from giving. Not long ago, she donated 100 teddy bears to foster children in Marion County. Her next project is already underway: a new batch of teddy bears for kids battling cancer, children she understands in the deepest way.

Despite hospital stays, chemo, and the weight of her diagnosis, Liliana radiates resilience. She holds tight to her faith, her family, her rabbit, and her mission to spread kindness.

Her story is one of courage and compassion woven together. A child enduring the unthinkable, yet choosing to bring comfort to others. A family carrying heavy burdens, yet still counting blessings. And a rabbit named Snowflake, silently standing guard, proving that sometimes healing comes not just from medicine but from the presence of love.

Liliana’s journey is far from finished. But as she hugs her rabbit and dreams of bringing smiles to children who are hurting, she is showing the world what it truly means to fight with heart.

If you can, send your thoughts, prayers, and encouragement to Liliana and her family. Because every message, every gesture of love, reminds them that they are not alone in this fight.
