Figure with Bird Mask

A Maya ceramic figure wearing a bird mask, dating to 550–900 CE. Now on display at the Museo de Sitio de Palenque “Alberto Ruz L’Huillier,” Mexico.

As part of their royal duties, ancient Maya kings and queens would take on the personas of avian deities during masked performances.

This figurine, discovered at the center of a tomb’s altar, depicts a ruler seated on a blue-green throne wearing a bird mask.

The hooked beak evokes that of a raptor, while the finely crafted details represent jade ornaments and luxurious textiles.
